It seems to me .... there is always a Knapp connection !

Although I have seen this photo of William Buck Dana circa 1870's before, it was not until today that I found out who took the photo. Napoleon Sarony the man who with his partner Henry B. Major hired a young 16 year old Joseph F. Knapp as a lithographers apprentice in 1848. William B. Dana as most regular website readers know married Katherine Floyd and was the builder of Moss Lots the Dana estate on Forge River in Mastic. This grand estate was inherited in 1915 by his grandson William Shepherd Dana who was only 5 years old when grandpa Buck's photo appeared in a lengthy article on the very prominent and historic Dana family in Munsey's Magazine in 1897. But both William S. Dana and Joseph F. Knapp the grandson of above mentioned Joseph F. Knapp would become Mastic neighbors and "speed boat rivals" on Moriches , Narrow & Great South Bay in the 1920's among other things that millionaire young grandsons and country gentleman do.
