A TRUE STORY ABOUT

DIFFIE'S DIABLO MOTORS

Updated APRIL 2, 2020

"WHERE YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE THEM THE SHIRT OF YOUR BACK, TO GET A GOOD RIDE "

Just a Tune Off Your Toungue

This story idea all started fermenting I suppose about two weeks ago (Sept 2008) , when I took a little ride into downtown Nashville. I had the car radio on, tuned to NPR, listening to classical music, 'cause I'm known to be a classy kind of guy at times. Well they were playing one that wasn't my cup of tea and so I punched the button over to WSM - 650 AM, Now WSM is the absolute Grandaddy & Grandma of Country Music Stations, BAR NONE.

I had made a stop and when I got back in the car, turned the key and the engine fired, I heard that snare drum roll intro, to a song on the radio, that instantly flashed me back, to the very first time I ever heard it on a car radio in 1991. Back then, I pulled over to the side of the road to listen. Now, it had been a while since I heard it on the car radio, so I took the 2 minutes and 47 seconds out of my day to thoroughly enjoy a good listen again. And it sounded and felt

REALLY REALLY GOOD !!!

Later that day, I e mailed Joe Diffie, to tell him about it. He replied, "Cool Man" or some thing along those lines. It was kind of like my old Music Row days again, when a fellow songwriter or recording artist. would first hear a new release and tell anyone associated with it "Guess What I Heard On The Radio Today"

But that's not really what this story is about .....

as that would be just too normal for Nashville .....

So Keep Your Shirt On And I'll Tell Ya All About It ......

Now just the other day, I got an E Mail with this photo in it, totally out of the blue !

OR WAS IT?

And with that, the old wheels started turning again .... turning backwards , but turning none the less ,

Back to April 2, 1991 .........

I was cruising into town in my new car, a 1936 Plymouth Sedan, with only 61,000 some odd miles on it .... I know I hear you, only 61,000 miles ?? .... c'mon man, the car is 55 years old ! Where the heck did you get a 55 year old car with such low miles on it ? And if it was the actual mileage, it must of cost you an arm and a leg right ?

This Is The Car .... So You Tell Me How Many Miles You See ,

Other Than A New Paint Job & Upholstry, It Was 100% Original

And Now Hold On Again Miss, Ms, Mrs or Mister Smarty Pants, And I'll Tell You

THAT THERE WAS ONLY ONE PLACE, WHERE YOU COULD

GET A CAR LIKE THIS IN NASHVILLE

YES INDEEDY !

DER DIFFSTER WAS THE ONLY PLACE IN TOWN

OR SO I THOUGHT.......

TILL I TOOK THAT DRIVE, THAT FATEFULL DAY...

RIGHT INTO THE

TWILIGHT ZONE

Our Story Continues .....

....... I was heading into my music publishers office, when I had to hit the brakes ! For right there, on Broadway, directly across from the entrances to Music Row, and Dead Centered EXACTLY Between 16th & 17th Avenues,

Was A New Dealership Called Broadway Motors, That Looked Like It Was Getting Ready To Open.

What I saw there that Tuesday, April 2, 1991 I almost couldn't believe. I pulled onto their lot . which was still bare btw. got out of my Plymouth and stared long & hard into their showroom window.

HOLY COW !!!

Then I sped over to the office, to tell anyone who would listen, what I saw just around the corner, on the very day ! that a record of a song, I had written with Kim Williams, well over a year before, was released to the radio.

Some of them good ol boys at the publishing office, looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears. So I went back to the dealership with a camera, because seeing is believing right ? I knocked on the door and someone came to it. I told him my story and although they were not open for business yet, the guy was intrigued and nice enough to let me come inside to take this photo.

APRIL 2 , 1991 - WHO'S SMILING NOW !
You can see my '36 Plymouth out on the empty lot, I had not purchased my new wide whitewalls yet.
