"SUFFOLK CLUB"

It was founded by August Belmont in 1858 as an exclusive hunting and fishing club. Originally there were just a handful of millionaires in it. They had two locations one at Belmont Lake in the town of Babylon and the other one of them being a very large tract of land on the Carman's River from Shirley to Yaphank just north of the "goin over". Belmont died in 1890 and the club was the taken over around the turn of the century by Anson Hard who maintained it as a private shooting preserve. Suffolk County aquired most of the land in 1960 and today it is known as Southaven Park.

August Belmont 1816-1890

I would think these photos below were taken sometime after Mr, Belmont's death up until say 1910 as it looks like the rules changed on who could join...several of these folks look like they could of rode with Butch Cassidy & the Sundance kid! ....but I could be wrong
