AND THE RACE IS ON

In August of 1925, The Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association held a weeklong series of races that traveled from Bayshore to Bellport. Although most entries were of the sail variety a few "speedboats" were also entered . It's a good thing too, because the first races were a bust for the sailboats. Of interest to me were two entries from the east that I know hailed from Narrow Bay in Mastic.

William S. Dana's Elco Express Cruiser the "Alberta B"finished second and J. F. Knapp's boat was called "Sea Sled" by the reporter who may of well been confused. Sea Sled was the manufacturer of Knapp's 30 foot, "Miss Demure" which was her name.

J. F. Knapp who's boat was faster than Dana's did not finish this race and looking at the further reports, I found that the wind picked up and The Times mainly reported the results of the sail boats with very little info on how the power squadron did. So how long Dodi & Dana's "sanctioned powerboat racing careers" continued for I cannot say. I can say they both had power boats till the end of their days.

FAST FORWARD ONE YEAR ........

Captain Knapp Returns...... and by now his Sea Sled has a name...So does Bill Dana in his Elco Alberta B......and the Coot and the Comet

13. 5 Nautical Miles in 18:37

Nothing demure about that....he could of named her

"Haulin' Ass"
