PARADE DAYS
Mastic Beach Fire Department
1949
The new firehouse was opened in December of 1948. Soon afterwards in the spring of 49 they formed a band. In the early days there were several parades each year. Memorial Day, Fourth Of July, Labor Day and also when the Fire Department hosted a carnival. At the bottom of this page are links to more parade pics 1940's - 1960's
Lead Majorette Eileen Hemming
is wearing the Dark Feather . Anyone out there know who the rest of Majorettes Are?
HERE COMES THE BLUE & GOLD
I believe that's James Trainor blowing the whistle . That is Dottie Rutigliano on the left and her brother Mike Rutigliano on the far right, Anyone know who the other girls are? That's a fine looking 1937 Ford Roadster.
THE LADIES AUXILIARY
This looks like Neighborhood Road east somewhere between Beaver & Longfellow
Most likely they are heading to the Woodhull Cemetary.
That's Martin Linkh riding on the back. Wonder who the two guys are on the sidewalk?
Thanks to Martin's Grandaughter Carolyn Capel for the photos

The New Band Kickoff May 1949
Lots of M B Pioneer Names In Here. Azzatto, Barnes, DiPierro, Hansen, Hemming, Jacob, Sutters, Hesler and Ussery. Two of the Gold Star Mothers (Mothers who lost sons in WWI & II) are Mrs. Tom Sutters & Mrs. Philip Coyle, lived next door to each other on Jefferson Drive. They may of been related. Mr. Tom Sutters ran the meat department at Fishers market, I went to school with the Coyles other son Tommy.
Neighborhood Road, October 2003
The town dedicated it in 1949 and then seems to have forgot about it.
TOP BAND LABOR DAY 1949 CHECK OUT THOSE CARS !!!!
WHAT! HIT THE TOP AND THEN BREAKUP ?
Like so much of the stuff I recall about the MBFD's early days, There was always some kind of controversy. They had just come off a prolonged several month fight over who was going to be chief. I went to school with the then "acting" chief's daughter Sandy.
thanks to former Chief Gary Messinetti for his Mother's Scrapbook Items
