STORM KING TOO

today

Last spring (2002), when i was first looking into the history of J. F. Knapp's original STORM KING, I came upon the existence of Knapp's Storm King Too & III. In the course ofconversation i had with dan acierno in sayville , l i. , he told me he knew where the S K TOO was located !

in november of 2002 i spoke on the phone with her current owner. I filled him in on it's original owner and he filled me in on what he learned about her since taking title in 1992.

in january of 2003 i got to see her in person in a canal in freeport, long island. she's looking a little worse for wear, but still afloat. i heard she has sunk a number of times. it was a holiday and i couldn't get that close to the gated dock, but it still was an amazing sight.

all covered up for winter a flying bridge has taken the spot where her dinghy used to be. there was a small boat tied to her stern blocking the view of her name which is now just

STORM KING

however there is strong evidence to support my theory that the original storm king is still around too!

the bow rail is replaced

I'M SURE A LOT MORE CHANGES HAVE ALSO BEEN MADE IN 62 YEARS .

here is the view aft in deckhouse when she was new in 1940. Originally home ported at dodi's ft. lauderdale florida residence, it's a bit ironic that she wound up staying on long island .... just like he did.

THIS WAS HER REPLACEMENTIN 1946

THE SMALLER 38 FOOT MATTHEWS STORM KING III

There would be 1 & 1/2 More Storm Kings To Come
