STONY BROOK
Stony Brook 1928 Aerial View. Lots
of woods.
I don't know much more about the
Penney's stay in Stony Brook than I do of their time in Yaphank.
They were here for several years from around 1928 to '33. Both
of their children would of been born by this time and I do know
they had a phone. They also had another home. A "winter residence"
in Johns Island, South Carolina. (Near Charleston ) I know even
less about their place in South Carolina, (I've been to Charleston
& Beaufort in the low country area ) other than they still
had it when they lived in Hampton Bays. Like the rest of her family,
Claire got around.
The Suffolk County Phone Book for
1929 Lists W. O. Penney as living on North Counntry Road (That
would be 25 A today) It also shows his brother Clarence in Moriches.
There are also references to Clairedale Kennels in Stony Brook
in several AKC records.
The Town in the 1940's
Long Island artist William Sidney
Mount (1807-1868) did many paintings of the
Stony Brook, Setauket area. It is
still steeped in colonialism
THE PENNEYS SOLD THEIR STONY BROOK PLACE
ON AUGUST 10th 1933
This would be Claire Knapp Penney's
Last Move as she located to
HAMPTON BAYS
