And
While recently in the map room of the Library of Congress in Washington DC, I came across this 1934 map that I have never seen. Probably the one in Brookhaven burned up in the building department fire many years ago.
Other than its huge size (each page is about 3' x 4' ) it's not that much different than other 1930's & '40's maps of the area
I have seen , but it does have some unique characteristics.
"MASTIC PARK" IS NOW 12 YEARS OLD
"MASTIC BEACH" NOW HAS 6 SECTIONS
THE MAP HAS THE 1910 PLANS OF F. J. QUINBY'S "DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTURY" TANGIER . TANGIER NEVER WAS....HOWEVER AFTER WWII , WALTER T. SHIRLEY USED QUINBY'S PLANS FOR HIS OWN "SCALED DOWN" VERSION OF A TOWN HE CALLED SHIRLEY.
NOTICE THAT TANGIER'S PLANS CALLED FOR WIDENING FIRE ISLAND FROM SMITH POINT TO PATTERSQUASH. QUINBY WANTED TO BUILD AN ATLANTIC CITY STYLE DEVELOPMENT THERE. PROBABLY USING THE DREDGE SPOILS OF NARROW BAY AS PART OF HIS PLAN FOR TANGIER WAS TO HAVE OCEAN LINERS COME THROUGH THE BAY FROM MONTAUK STOPPING AT TANGIER BEFORE GOING ON TO NEW YORK CITY.
MASTIC ROAD IS WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS WILLIAM FLOYD PARKWAY
SOUTHAVEN IS EXTENDED TO THE EAST ...... SOUTH COUNTRY ROAD IS MONTAUK HIGHWAY
"TALE OF TWO TOWNS"
It's very clear here, that there are two towns of Mastic Beach and no plans yet for J. F. Knapp to sell out. The newly constructed Aspen Road transverses his estate east to west but notice that the colonial trail known as Neighborhood Rd is erased off the map. As was specified in the 1929 agreement between Knapp and Home Guardian Co.
THE STATE OF THE ESTATES MAP HERE
WHAT'S WITH THE 1930's UNIVERSAL PICTURES LOGO?
Bridge & Tunnel engineer Paul G. Brown , J. P. Knapp's brother in law was on the Universal board of directors. He probably designed Dodi Knapp's secret tunnel in Mastic Beach too.
